Using fuzzy link cost and dynamic choice of link quality metrics to achieve QoS and QoE in wireless mesh networks. Journal of Network and Computer Applications

The growth of multimedia applications and wireless systems requires a new behavior of routing protocols for wireless mesh networks (WMNs). It is necessary to provide not only the minimum requirements for quality of service (QoS), but also to assure the quality of experience (QoE) support for multimedia applications. In this context, the usage of only one link quality metric for routing different types of packets within the network is not enough to ensure applications with suitable QoS and QoE levels. This paper presents a variation of the WMN routing protocol optimized link state routing (OLSR), to achieve QoS and QoE requirements for multimedia applications. It is based on the dynamic choice of metrics and in a fuzzy link cost (FLC) to determine the best routes for multimedia packets. The proposed FLC metric is based on a fuzzy system that uses two link quality metrics, namely expected transmission count (ETX) and minimum delay (MD), to define a new metric. Simulations were performed to demonstrate the performance of the proposed metric compared to the ones present in the original OLSR and other current versions of this protocol. For comparison purposes, it was considered different performance evaluation QoS metrics and the quality of videos received by the user in a higher competition scenario.

A fuzzy queue-aware routing approach for wireless mesh networks

Recent advances in Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have overcome the drawbacks of traditional wired and ad-hoc networks and now they are seen as a means of allowing last mile communications with quality level assurance in Future Multimedia Systems. However, new routing schemes are needed to provide end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) support for delay/loss/jitter-sensitive multimedia applications. The well-known OLSR (Optimized Link State Routing) protocol with ETX (Expected Transmission Count) metric brings many benefits to the path selection process, but has a drawback with regard to queue availability management, which reduces the system performance. This problem is caused when OLSR-EXT control messages are exchanged and the queues of mesh routers along the end-to-end communication path are overloaded. As a result, multimedia-related packets will suffer from loss/delay/jitter and the overall system performance will decrease. This paper proposes the Optimized Link State Routing-Fuzzy ETX Queue (OLSR-FEQ) protocol to overcome the limitations of OLSR-ETX regarding queue availability, QoS and QoE assurance. OLSR-FEQ optimizes network and user-based parameters by coordinating queue availability, QoS and fuzzy issues in the routing decision process as a way of allocating the best paths for multimedia applications. Performance evaluations were carried out with the Network Simulator (NS-2.34) to show the benefits of the proposed solution when compared with existing routing schemes, namely OLSR-ETX, OLSR-FLC, OLSR-MD and HWMP (IEEE 802.11s standard), regarding QoS (unsuccessful packet delivery and throughput) and QoE (PSNR, SSIM, VQM and MOS) parameters.

QoE-based packet drop control for 3D-video streaming over wireless networks. QoE-based packet drop control for 3D-video streaming over wireless networks

Currently, the Internet is experiencing a revolution in the provisioning and demand of multimedia services. In this context, 3D-video is envisioned to attract more and more the multimedia market with the perspective for enhanced applications (video surveillance, mission critical control, entertainment, etc.). However, 3D-video content delivery places increased bandwidth demands, as well as have rigorous Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) requirements for efficient support. This paper proposes a novel QoE-aware packet controller mechanism, which aims at connecting real-time 3D-video streaming applications over congested wireless networks with acceptable levels of QoS and QoE over the time. Simulation experiments were carried out to show the impact and benefit of our proposal. Subjective and objective QoE metrics were used for benchmarking, showing that in congestion periods our solution improves the quality level of real-time 3D-video sequences from the user point-of-view, as well as, optimizes the usage of wireless network resources.

Following decades of research, the multimedia networks remain
a great challenge; however, the modern multimedia wireless
networks with video streaming and Internet Protocol voice, have
been attracting special attention due to factors such as mobility
and heterogeneity in the devices that are used, which can
influence the quality of a user’s experience in a particular
application or service. This article compares two algorithms for
the disposal of packets in wireless networks based on the quality
of the experience of the user with video applications when there
is multimedia traffic congestion in the wireless networks and
where the results obtained surpass those of the wireless networks

An efficient heuristic LoRaWAN adaptive resource allocation for IoT applications

Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) enables flexible long-range communication with low power consumption and low-cost design perspectives. However, the adoption of this technology brings new challenges due to the densification of IoT devices, which causes signal interference and affects the QoS directly. On the other hand, the flexibility in the LoRaWAN transmission configurations allows higher management in the use of end-device parameters, which allows better resource utilization and improves network scalability. This paper proposes an adaptive solution to handle the define best LoRaWAN parameter settings to reduce the channel utilization and, consequently, maximize the number of packets delivered. Additionally, to validate our method, we formulated mixed-Integer linear programming and results compared to those given by the heuristics. Results provided by the heuristic are close to those provided by the MILP.

Content Placement Aware Cache Decision: A Caching Policy Based on the Content Replacement Ratio for Information-Centric Network

Information-Centric Network (ICN) has been an emerging network paradigm for Future Internet based on a host-to-content approach. In this model, both router and users devices are able to store content. One of the key features of ICN is in-network content caching, reducing bandwidth consumption, server load and even enhancing QoE of end-users. ICN behavior is determined by a 3-tuple, which are routing, content insertion and content replacement. Besides, Routing algorithms influence content insertion performance and, which in turn, influences in replacement policies performance. Furthermore, it is proven that content insertion policies influence routing performance and there is no work regarded to analyze the impact of replacement algorithms in content insertion. Therefore this paper proposed a new caching metric called Replacement Ratio and a dynamic content insertion strategy named RatioCache to prove that content replacement, which is strongly bounded to caching system, also influence the caching process. Our results improved up to 110% cache hit ratio, and reduced up to 30% server load and latency up to 10%, thus RatioCache performance shows replacement policies influence caching policies and enhances network performance.

Cache-Aware Interest Routing: Impact Analysis on Cache Decision Strategies in Content-Centric Networking

Information-Centric Networking (ICN) is one of the most promising model for dealing with the cern of the current Internet scenario, that is content. In this model, either routers or user devices in the network are capable of storing content in cache, where a client device pull a content by expressing an interest of the desired content name. One of the most sucessfull implementation of ICN is Content-Centric Networking (CCN) proposed by PARC. In CCN, the forwarding strategy pushes interest packets torwards a content server through a route determined by the Shortest-Path Route (SPR) strategy. However, SPR cannot fully exploit the network caching benefits, because the caching process only happens within the path without considering cache saturation level. Therefore, we propose Least Cache Routing (LCR) cache-aware strategy. Besides being based on SPR, LCR is constantly looking for the least saturated paths. The results shows that, a slight improvement on forwarding strategy is capable of improving LCE and LCD cache decision policies. Our results shows 150% and 53% performance gain on cache hit probability when LCR is jointly running with, respectively, LCE and LCD on Torus network.

A MultiCriteria Caching Decision for information centric networks

Information Centric Networks (ICN) has been a new network paradigm and it has attracted a lot of attention recently. In this new model, contents are retrieved by their name, not by IP address, shifting from host-to-host to a host-to-content approach. In networking-caching plays a very important role in ICN, which enables routers to cache content in the path between a user and the permanent server, for instance. These intermediate nodes use a caching scheme to decide whether to store a content or not. However, most of the current caching schemes are only-one-criterion based and, given the dynamics of the network, this only one criterion may not be suitable, resulting in both low network hit ratio and performance. Therefore, we designed a MultiCriteria Caching Decision scheme for ICN, which not only considers one criterion for caching decision, but it aggregates three of them to better distribute content over the network and provide user’s requests. Our results got a much higher cache hit ratio than the other evaluated schemes and a reasonable download time.

Context-aware adaptation mechanism for video dissemination over Flying Ad-Hoc Networks

The user experience on watching live video sequences transmitted over a Flying Ad-Hoc Networks (FANETs) must be considered to drop packets in overloaded queues, in scenarios with high buffer overflow and packet loss rate. In this paper, we introduce a context-aware adaptation mechanism to manage overloaded buffers. More specifically, we propose a utility function to compute the dropping probability of each packet in overloaded queues based on video context information, such as frame importance, packet deadline, and sensing relevance. In this way, the proposed mechanism drops the packet that adds the minimum video distortion. Simulation evaluation shows that the proposed adaptation mechanism provides real-time multimedia dissemination with QoE support in a multi-hop, multi-flow, and mobile network environments.

Middleware Group Communication Mechanisms in M2M environments

Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication is a technology that will bring new horizons for the current concept of smart systems. However, efficient M2M communication requires the design of middleware/platform components able to deal with multiple application requirements and heterogeneous wireless environments. In order to address this challenge, this paper proposes the Communication Manager Component (CMC) to integrate the M2M middleware. CMC enables the management of communication mechanisms, such as data-aggregation, sleep-schedule, uplink-schedule and signaling-aggregation, aiming to save energy and to satisfy multiple application data requests. The management is performed dynamically taking into account the applications requests, the base-station overload indicators and the M2M devices’ status (eg energy level, location).

A quality of experience handover system for heterogeneous multimedia wireless networks

The convergence of emerging real-time multimedia services, the increasing coverage of wireless networks and the ever-growing popularity of mobile devices, are leading to an era of user-centric multimedia wireless services. In this scenario, heterogeneous communications will co-exist and ensure that the end-user is always best connected. However, the Quality of Experience (QoE) support for emerging video applications in multi-operator environments remains a significant challenge and is crucial for the success of wireless multimedia systems. This paper presents a Quality of Experience Handover Architecture for Converged Heterogeneous Wireless Networks, called QoEHand. QoEHand allows users of multimedia content to be always best connected in IEEE 802.11e and IEEE 802.16e environments. Simulation results show the impact and benefit of the proposed solution in multi-access and multi-operator wireless scenarios by using objective and subjective QoE metrics.

ETXMULT: A routing metric for multimedia applications in wireless mesh networks

In a near future, wireless mesh networks (WMNs) and multimedia content will be abundant technologies/applications in the Internet. Hence, in order to keep and attract new customers, as well as, reduce operational costs, the development of new quality level control schemes are needed and it is one of the key requirements for the success of next generation wireless multimedia systems. With this goal in mind, this paper presents a new routing metric with focused on estimation error on wireless links, named ETXMULT (Expected Transmission Count for Multimedia Content), to assure high-quality paths on multi-hop wireless networks for multimedia traffic. Simulations were carried out, by using Network Simulator 2 (NS-2), to demonstrate the behavior and benefits of the proposed metric with Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) routing protocol. The results presented improvements in the distribution of multimedia content compared to the original Expected Transmission Count (ETX) metric, by analyzing well-know QoS and QoE metrics.

Providing Quality of Service for Mesh Networks Using Link Delay Measurements

One of the main problems faced by ad hoc networks is providing specific quality of service guarantees for multimedia applications, mainly due to factors such as radio signal fading and node mobility. Since mesh networks are a special type of ad hoc network, they inherit these networks’ problems. This paper’s main goal is to present OLSR-MD, an extension to OLSR (Optimized Link State Routing), to provide quality of service based on link delay measurements. An evaluation of OLSR-MD in a mesh network to be deployed at the Federal University of Pará, by means of ns2 (version 2.30) simulations, showed that this protocol performed better than other OLSR-based alternatives studied in the simulations.

Using Multiple Metrics with the Optimized Link State Routing Protocol for Wireless Mesh Networks

Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) can be utilized in various applications. However, they lack standards, leading to several issues that need to be addressed to ensure the proper functioning of these networks. Among these issues, routing is the primary focus of this paper. Therefore, we propose the use of multiple metrics with the proactive Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol to provide quality of service routing. Although it has been demonstrated that routing with multiple metrics is an NP-complete problem, we illustrate how the techniques of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Pruning can be combined to facilitate multiple-metric routing, delivering the best available routes based on the metrics considered. A performance study of the metrics included in the proposal is also conducted using the NS simulator.

Alternatives for community metropolitan networks for the major cities of the Amazon region of Brazil: the case of Belem

We conduct a comparative analysis of two proposals for establishing a facilities-based metropolitan network to serve the education and research community in the city of Belém do Pará in Brazil, utilizing the “do-it-yourself” (DIY) model for building infrastructure, and benefiting around a dozen research and education institutions. The first alternative involves constructing a fiber optic network using Gigabit Ethernet technology. The second option employs a metropolitan wireless network based on the IEEE 802.16 standard, examining the feasibility of this technology in a context with the unique characteristics of the Amazon region. In both cases, we demonstrate that the capital cost for each institution is feasible, and that the total cost in the medium term is lower than the recurring costs associated with maintaining the traditional model reliant on telecommunications provider services.

Redes sem fio Metropolitanas baseadas no padrão 802.16: um estudo de caso para Belém

The necessity of wireless networks already has been felt a long time ago in sight of limitations imposed by the wired networks, mainly related to the increasing necessity of flexibility of the current network projects. In association to this necessity, also is observable a crescent demand for data transmissions that supply the current multimedia applications requirements, just as a larger bandwidth and a greater number of users attended on larger distances. In this context, the wireless metropolitan area networks are one solution that allies the flexibility, common in wireless networks, with the possibility of reaching a greater number of users. This paper investigates the Standard 802.16 and analyses its use for Belém-PA.
